Pictures and Social Justice

Pictures and Social Justice

I always like it when LEAF members want to share information with the group.  Sharing and helping each other through these times is what we’re about! This information was provided by Leonita. Here are two pieces on your pictures of impacts of incarceration and social justice.

First the pictures…even though this photo project is targeting the Central Ohio community, I think it’s worth our consideration since educating the general public on impacts of incarceration is beneficial to all.   If you decide to submit photos, let us know.  Even if you’re photos aren’t used there, we can post them here!

Our Stories – Images on the Impacts of Incarceration

A Photo Project of Restored Citizens and Communities for Change

Help RCC4C as we work to enlighten the community in Central Ohio about the impact of incarceration.

We are writing to invite your participation in an exciting and interactive photo project! “Images on the Impact of Incarceration” will feature original pictures taken by Restored Citizens and others impacted by the criminal justice system with the purpose of showing how these systems have impacted lives.

We are seeking submissions of original photos of a more symbolic / meditative nature with an accompanying statement which helps tell the story of how incarceration impacts you, your family, your community.

You can submit up to 5 photos for consideration. These photos will be turned into a video with the moving images, as well as an installation piece that will be used by Restored Citizens and Communities for Change (www.rcc4c.org) a non-profit organization of restored citizens and allies working together to end mass incarceration and promote restorative justice polities in the criminal justice system in Ohio.

Sign up here by MONDAY OCT 5th if you are interested. Photos will need to be submitted with captions by the end of October.

You do not need to be a professional! This is for anyone with access to a camera or smart phone who wishes to be considered! When you sign up, Courtney will be in touch with you with more information on the project – including full guidelines and deadlines!

Organizer of this Project: Courtney Nichols, cmn418@gmail.com

Some LEAF folk have expressed an interest in becoming more politically astute in the area of social justice.  While this LEAF is not a political organization, we do respect your rights as an American citizen to get involved in the process. (We won’t tell you what to say or how to vote!)   For those with that inclination, this program in Columbus may be of interest.

Faith Rooted Organizing

A Conversation and Training with Alexia Salvatierra
Catholic Center of Columbus, 197 E. Gay St. Columbus
Free parking available on east side of the building. Light refreshments will be served.

There is a growing hunger in faith communities towards doing justice, but many are confused about how to put this vision for systemic change into practice.  Others with a longstanding commitment to justice are seeking for a deeper integration between their faith and their work for justice.

Join us for an evening with Alexia Salvatierra as she shares wisdom from historical and current faith-rooted struggles for economic and racial justice, providing insight for strengthening our work in alleviating poverty and addressing criminal justice reform.

Faith-Rooted Organizing is an approach to engaging faith leaders and congregations into justice work that is completely guided and shaped by our faith and enables people of faith to contribute all of our gifts as God’s people to broader movements.
